FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 11, 2020

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Nikil Saval, the choice of organized labor and working families, is proud to announce he has earned the endorsement of Councilmember Kendra Brooks. Councilmember Brooks is the first Working Families Party candidate to serve on Philadelphia City Council, having received support from a coalition of working families, labor unions, and community organizations including almost 30,000 votes in district total.

Both Saval and Councilmember Brooks are leaders of an exciting new generation of leaders in Philadelphia. They’ve both driven up turnout, brought new people into the process and will continue making our democracy more welcoming for all. Saval and Councilmember Brooks are showing the status quo isn’t good enough and new voices from within the progressive movement are building a better future for Philadelphia.

Councilmember Brooks built an historic coalition that propelled her to victory in 2019, of which Saval was an important part. He was the first ward leader in the city to publicly support Brooks in her history-making candidacy for City Council. Because of that support, Saval was threatened by party leaders and insiders with expulsion from the Philadelphia Democratic City Committee.

Since Brooks took office in January, she has been leading the charge to protect renters and homeowners, provide support for essential and frontline workers, and fight for restorative justice in our communities. Councilmember Brooks needs progressive partners in Harrisburg. Progressive legislation passed by City Council is under constant threat of preemption by the conservative majority in the State Senate and State House. The progressive movement must contest for political power on both the citywide and statewide level for Pennsylvania to work for all of us.

Nikil Saval is the leader Philadelphia needs in Harrisburg. I’ve seen firsthand his commitment to racial, economic, and social justice and am proud to endorse Nikil and support his campaign for the first Senate District,” said Councilmember Brooks. “Now, more than ever, we need progressive leaders who understand we are facing a moment that doesn’t demand just a new normal, but a better future for all of us. I trust Nikil to be a partner in building that future and look forward to working with him as State Senator for our City.”

Saval said, “I’m incredibly honored to have the endorsement of Councilmember Brooks, whose work as an organizer, historic campaign, and tenure as a legislator have already changed the face of Philadelphia. I am proud to work alongside her to change what is possible in our politics, and to advance the rights and interests of our multiracial working-class.”

Saval’s campaign has raised over a quarter of a million dollars from more than 2,000 individual contributions, and reached out to 75,000 residents of the district by canvassing via phone or at the doors.

Saval has been endorsed by over twenty community organizations and labor unions: UNITE HERE Locals 274, 634, and 54, Teamsters BMWED-IBT, Laborers District Council Locals 57, 135, 332, and 413, Reclaim Philadelphia, Our Revolution, One Pennsylvania, Neighborhood Networks, Second Generation, Sunrise Philadelphia, 350 Philadelphia, Food and Watch Watch Action Pennsylvania, Democratic Socialists of America Philadelphia, Data for Progress, the Temple Association of University Professionals, the Faculty and Staff Federation of the Community College of Philadelphia, the First Democratic Ward, the Second Democratic Ward, Pennsylvania Stands Up, Philly SocFem, and LILAC.
