Philadelphia, PA – Nikil Saval, progressive challenger, first Asian American ward leader and community organizer, will announce his campaign for the First Senate District of Pennsylvania this Sunday, December 8, 2019 at Hawthorne Park at 12th and Catherine Streets.

Nikil is running for Senate in the 1st District because Philadelphia needs a strong progressive voice in Harrisburg to fight for the working class and take on the threats of climate change, housing insecurity, toxic schools and corporate greed. Nikil’s campaign will center housing rights, a Green New Deal for PA, workers’ rights, universal family care, education and criminal justice reform. Nikil is committed to justice for working people, immigrants and people of color. He will fight for a Pennsylvania that works for the many and not the few.

Nikil began his organizing in the labor movement in 2009 as a volunteer with UNITE HERE where he organized customer boycotts to promote the rights of hotel workers. In 2013 when the Governor Corbett’s budget cuts forced the layoff of 1,000 student climate staff from the Philadelphia School District, Nikil helped organize a successful two-week fast for safe schools that won those workers their jobs back.

After emerging as a local leader in Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, Nikil co-founded Reclaim Philadelphia, an organization which has fought to elect progressive candidates like Larry Krasner, Elizabeth Fiedler, Helen Gym, Isaiah Thomas and Kendra Brooks. In 2018 Nikil was elected leader of South Philadelphia’s Second Ward and he continues to build a more progressive Democratic Party.
